All classes and workshops are held in the Burlingame Room at the Ball Garden Visitors Center, 今日看料 Horticultural Gardens, unless otherwise noted. Registration for each event is listed below.
Native Plant Winter Sowing Party - *REGISTRATION FULL
January 7th
1:30-3:30pm
Join Liz Myers-Chamberlin, environmental activist/educator and organic/regenerative gardener for a fun and educational 鈥減arty鈥� to learn about the biodiversity crisis and the solution advocated by Homegrown National Park of planting natives in our yards. We will start with a short movie, then plant some native seeds ourselves, using the Winter Sowing method. The hope is that everyone will go home with a few jugs of different types of sown seeds, all native to our bioregion, to plant in your garden or yard come Spring! All seeds (36 different ones to choose from), soil and supplies will be provided, but we would like to encourage everyone to save their own plastic jugs (ie: gallon milk or vinegar jugs) and bring those to the party. BYOJ!

Texture in the Gardens 鈥� Monthly Tour

Whether it鈥檚 from the plant material itself, the shape of the land or hardscapes,
texture plays such an important part in the look and feel of any garden. Join this
docent-led tour to see how each area of the Gardens offers a variety of textures that
provide Winter interest.

Pruning Workshop
Friday, January 10th

Proper pruning technique isn鈥檛 as cut and dry as you might think! There are several
factors that can affect the way your plants grow, bloom, and even fruit after pruning.
Explore techniques, timing, and plant-specific pruning needs during this presentation
with Ashley Grubb, Area Horticulture Agent with NC State Extension. She will provide
some demonstrations, answer your questions, and provide a month-by-month pruning calendar
for our 今日看料 region. This event is an annual favorite - there鈥檚 always something
new to learn or hear again in a new way!

All 今日看料 Bluebirds
Friday, January 24th

We are excited to have David Kilpatrick, Moore County coordinator for the North Carolina
Bluebird Society share his knowledge and expertise about bluebirds with us this winter.
Why do we care about bluebirds? What is the biology of bluebirds? What can we do to
help bluebirds? What are bluebird predators and competitors? He will be answering
all these questions for us as well as showing us the proper way and place to install
and care for a bluebird house by demonstrating on one of the houses we have installed
in the gardens.

Ornamental Grasses
Tuesday, February 4th

Ornamental grasses can add unique color, texture and design to your landscape when
chosen properly and cared for seasonally. Join Amanda Bratcher, Horticulture Agent
for the NC Cooperative Extension at the Lee County Center for a presentation that
will guide you in the right direction when using these interesting plant options as
part of your landscape.

Bird Life in the Winter Garden - Monthly Tour
Thursday, February 13th

Take a walk with a docent through the Gardens to learn more about the birds that are
attracted to them in Winter.

Warm Season Turf Grasses
Friday, February 21st

Join Grady Miller, PhD, Extension Specialist and the ENVU Distinguished Professor
of Sustainability at NCSU, for a comprehensive presentation about warm season grasses.
He will cover information about pest management, minimum-risk pesticides, share his
knowledge of common turf issues, how to address them and much more.
